Rhino Historic Tours: The Greatest Punk Shows That Never Happened (Article)
Thursday, November 13, 2014
38 years ago today, a UK tour was announced which might well have been viewed as the greatest lineup of punk artists to ever travel together in the ‘70s if it had ever come to fruition. But it didn’t. On November 13, 1976, the UK music publication known as Melody Maker broke the news that November 29th had been set as the kickoff for a 14-date tour featuring co-headliners the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. The initial performance was set to take place at Newcastle City Hall, and in addition to the aforementioned bands, the other artists on the bill were reported to be Talking Heads, the

30 years ago on the stage of the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, Prince simultaneously started the tour to promote his latest album, Purple Rain, while also allowing that evening’s audience to witness the live debut of his latest backing band, The Revolution. Actually, The Revolution was really just Prince’s former backing band, but in addition to finally getting a name other than “Prince’s backing band,” there was one very key change in the lineup: guitarist Dez Dickerson, who’d been a stalwart since Prince had toured behind his self-titled second album, departed the ranks. Depressing

If you go back and check out the piece, you’ll see that the bill featured a pretty impressive lineup, but while the show was undeniably done in an effort to draw attention to an important matter, it’s fair to say that its success was seriously outshined by the far-higher profile event which kicked off 35 years ago today. Rhino Historic Tours: Wrapping Up the First US Festival (Article)
Friday, September 5, 2014
32 years ago today, the one truly great rock festival in Homer Simpson’s lifetime came to a conclusion...and since this is a reference which only hardcore Simpsons fans are likely to appreciate, we’ll go ahead and clarify that, yes, as the title of this piece indicates, we are talking about the first US Festival. If you didn’t come of age in the ‘80s, there’s a very reasonable chance that you’ve never even heard of the US Festival, and that’s fair enough, as only two of them were ever held – the other was on Memorial Day weekend of 1983 – and although portions of the event have been released
