This Day in 1987: The Jesus and Mary Chain get booted off American TV (Article)
Monday, December 5, 2016
29 years ago today, The Jesus and Mary Chain took a pass on a chance at gaining a slightly larger American fanbase because they refused to concede to a demand by CBS. Unless you were an obsessive Anglophile in the ‘80s, you may not have realized that there was a brief window when CBS decided to air an American version of the classic British music series Top of the Pops, but indeed they did. Unfortunately, when the producers of TOTP U.S. wanted to run a video by The Jesus and Mary Chain on the show in 1987, the network’s Standards and Practices department balked at the idea of airing a video by

Happy Anniversary: The Jesus & Mary Chain, PSYCHOCANDY (Article)
Wednesday, November 30, 2016
31 years ago this month, The Jesus and Mary Chain released their debut studio album, which might well explain why the two stalwarts of the band – brothers Jim and William Reid – chose this month to announce that they’re on the verge of releasing their first new album in 18 years. You don’t find a lot of bands who claim to have taken their initial inspiration from Einsturzende Neubauten, the Shangri-Las, the Velvet Underground and Nico, but that’s the oft-told tale about where The Jesus and Marin Chain were coming from musically when they bought a Portastudio in 1983 and recorded their demo

Rhino Factoids: Rod Stewart and the Faces Call It a Day (Article)
Wednesday, October 12, 2016
41 years ago today, the final Faces show took place. Not that there weren’t occasional reunions here and there, but insofar as their existence as a proper band goes, it concluded after their performance at New York’s Nassau Coliseum on October 12, 1975. With Rod Stewart’s increasing success as a solo artist, it was probably always inevitable that Faces would come to an end, especially since Ronnie Lane had already left the group more or less because of that very reason. It probably also didn’t help things any that Ron Wood had begun working with the Rolling Stones, although it almost certainly

Rhino Factoids: “She’s Lost Control” earns Single of the Week status (Article)
Wednesday, October 5, 2016
36 years ago this week, NME – for those of you who don’t know your music-magazine acronyms, that’s the New Musical Express – doled out their coveted Single of the Week honor to Joy Division’s “She’s Lost Control.” The history of “She’s Lost Control” is a slightly convoluted one, in the sense that the single that scored the above-referenced accolade was actually not the first time the song had come to the attention of the music press. Joy Division debuted “She’s Lost Control” during a concert way back in June 1978, and it was subsequently recorded by the band and released on their 1979 debut

Happy Anniversary: Depeche Mode, “Get the Balance Right!” (Article)
Tuesday, January 31, 2017
34 years ago today, Depeche Mode released their seventh single, a non-LP track which was also the band’s first single to feature Alan Wilder as an official member. Recorded in December 1982 at London’s Blackwing Studios, “Get the Balance Right!” was a Martin Gore composition, one which was sung by Dave Gahan. You wouldn’t know this from the song’s video, however, as the opening lines of the song are actually lip-synched by Wilder. If you’ve ever heard the rumor that the reason for this decision wasn’t an artistic one but, rather, simply because no one in the band could bring themselves to tell

Happy Birthday: Bernard Sumner (Article)
Wednesday, January 4, 2017
Birthday boy Bernard Sumner has fronted a few different bands in his time, most notably Joy Division and New Order, but also Electronic and Bad Lieutenant. Beyond those outfits, though, Sumner’s distinctive voice has also been heard in several other songs over the years, and we’ve pulled together a six-pack of tracks that spotlights some of the higher-profile gigs he’s taken on. 1. A Certain Ratio, “Good Together” (1989): Peers of Joy Division, A Certain Ratio formed in Manchester in 1977, signed to Factory Records in 1979, and released their debut album, THE GRAVEYARD AND THE BALLROOM, on

Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Joy Division’s debut studio album, and to celebrate the occasion, Rhino is releasing a limited-edition version of the album on 180-gram ruby red vinyl, and it’ll be housed in an alternative white sleeve. In fact, we’re not just releasing it: we have released it! It came out today, and it’s in stores now! Now that we’re in the second paragraph of this announcement, we should probably take a step back and make sure that everyone who’s read this far is actually familiar with the album in question, not to mention the band that released it. 5 Things You Might Not Have Known About Ian Curtis (Article)
Monday, July 15, 2019
Today we celebrate the day that Ian Curtis, the late singer for Joy Division, was born, and although he’s no longer with us, that’s no reason to stop the celebration, especially considering how much wonderful music he provided in his short time on the planet. To commemorate the occasion, we’ve put together a list of five things that you may known have known about Curtis, so...let’s get started, shall we? 1. During his teen years, he wasn’t above engaging in a bit of shoplifting. Not that we’re excusing it, but when your soul tells you that you’ve got a life of music ahead of you... Well, let’s
