Biffy Clyro - MISSING PIECES Album Art Cover

It’s Wednesday, so it must be time to take another dip into the Rhino catalog and trot out a new quartet of cover songs that you may or may not have heard before. Let’s get started, shall we?

Andrea Corr, “Take Me I’m Yours” (2007): As if the last name wasn’t a giveaway, yes, Andrea Corr was formerly a member of The Corrs…and we supposed she always will be, technically, what with that last name of hers. Corr has covered a number of songs over the years, but this one can be found on her 2007 debut album, TEN FEET HIGH.

Barenaked Ladies, “Fight The Power” (1993): You may already be aware that this Public Enemy cover can be found on the soundtrack to the SNL-spawned 1993 film Coneheads, since the soundtrack was issued on vinyl – and yellow vinyl, no less! – on Record Store Day. It’s a fun LP from start to finish, but this is so damned goofy that you just have to hit play, hold on, and get ready to grin.

Biffy Clyro, “Umbrella” (2009): Yes, this is the Rihanna song, which can be found on her 2007 album GOOD GIRL GONE BAD. Since then, it’s been covered by everyone from Taylor Swift to the Manic Street Preachers, but we’ve always been fond of this take, which can be found on Biffy Clyro’s digital B-sides album MISSING PIECES.

Phantom Planet, “Somebody’s Baby” (1998): This cover of the classic Jackson Browne track that made such an impression in Fast Times at Ridgemont High found its most substantial audience after its inclusion on the soundtrack of the 2001 film Not Another Teen Movie. By then, however, the cover had already been available for two years, as it had actually debuted on the 1999 compilation IN THEIR EYES: ‘90S TEEN BANDS VS. ‘80S TEEN MOVIES. Since that particular album is out of print, however, we’re glad – as you should be, too – that it’s still available through the aforementioned 2001 soundtrack.
