Instant Gratification: The Grateful Dead, “Casey Jones” (2/21/71) WORKINGMAN’S DEAD: 50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION

As we type this sentence, we’re just over a month away from celebrating the 50th anniversary of an album by the Grateful Dead which served to reinvent the band in the eyes of many people, taking the more psychedelic-tinged improvisational aspects of their music and setting them aside in favor of a folk-rock sensibility that was decidedly easier for the mainstream listener to embrace. Given our connection to the band, it probably won’t shock you that we’re going to be celebrating the anniversary of this release, but WORKINGMAN’S DEAD really was a gamechanger for the band, making it particularly worthy of receiving the deluxe-edition treatment.

On July 10, Rhino will release WORKINGMAN’S DEAD: 50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EITION, a three-CD set that includes the original album – now newly remastered! – and a previously-unreleased concert recorded at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY on February 21, 1971. But, hey, why wait more than two months when you can hear one of the tracks right now?

In addition, Rhino will also be releasing WORKINGMAN’S DEAD: 50th ANNIVERSARY VINYL PICTURE DISC, which is a limited-edition LP - only 10,000 copies pressed! - that features the newly remastered version of the original album.
