Who Knows Where The Time Goes
With a Top 10 cover of “Both Sides Now” in November 1968, Judy Collins was a bona fide hitmaker; that the single wasn't even included on her then-new WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOES speaks to the set's embarrassment of riches. The Elektra album finds Collins' singing and song selection at their peak, with sympathetic production by David Anderle and top-notch instrumental accompaniment (by such greats as Stephen Stills, James Burton, Van Dyke Parks and Jim Gordon) lifting the music to the realm of the sublime. Judy moves from strength to strength across these nine songs, which include traditional folk (a chilling “Pretty Polly”), contemporary singer-songwriter gems (Leonard Cohen's “Bird On A Wire” and Sandy Denny's title track) and her own “My Father.” Many fans would cite WHO KNOWS WHERE THE TIME GOES as Judy Collins' finest album, and today we'll give it another spin to celebrate her birthday.
