America's Hat Trick

This shot of the three guys in America (when there were three guys in America) holding a mirror was done for their Hat Trick album, and this was in 1973. We rode out to the desert near Palm Springs; it was the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. We had to ride for part of a day through the desert and then we got to a palm oasis that had a spring-fed pond, and a waterfall, and palm trees. It was just this little paradise right in the middle of this hot desert. And that evening the guys went up to look at bats that were flying around. My partner Gary had brought this mirror out to the desert to use and they carried the mirror up there to the top of a ridge. We were down below. I had a telephoto lens, and when they got up there, suddenly I saw some little light flickering in the mirror. I said "Wait! Stop a second. Move the mirror." And we could see in the mirror the moon coming up behind us, and then the sun was setting on the other side, so it made a kind of an interesting picture. This was the back of the Hat Trick album. Actually, I always thought it should've been the front, and so did Gerry Beckley, and so Gary kinda made it a double-sided album; it's hard to tell which is the front and which is the back.
