Stanley Clarke

Stanley Clarke was one of the top jazz fusion bass players. I had never seen him before I went on tour with the New Barbarians (Ron Wood’s solo group with Keith Richards in the band, and Ian McLagan on piano, and Bobby Keys on sax). Their bass player was Stanley Clarke, who had come from the jazz fusion world. And he was just amazing! He played the bass just like it was a guitar – he played chords on it and solos like you’d never heard a bass played before those days in 1979. He was just fantastic to watch every night. Kind of like the Keith Richards of the bass.
