![]() The HolliesThe Hollies, in 1966. The first group I shot was actually Buffalo Springfield, and then I went to New York and spent a summer photographing The Lovin' Spoonful, who my friend Eric Jacobson was producing. And while I was shooting The Spoonful one afternoon at their house, Mama Cass came by with The Hollies. She just showed up with The Hollies and said "I want you guys to meet somebody." We all went out on the sidewalk and there were The Hollies, all these nice English guys, and the crazy Lovin' Spoonful. And they came in to Zal Yanovsky's house and we drank margaritas and kind of had a party in the afternoon. That was Mama Cass' thing; she was sort of like a social catalyst -- if she met somebody who was in town but didn't know anybody, she'd take 'em around and introduce them to people. Then they said "Oh, you're a photographer. We need publicity photos." So the next day I got to take pictures of The Hollies, and it was such a contrast to The Spoonful, who would never stand still long enough to get a group shot. In direct contrast, the Hollies were so cooperative -- they would stand there for as long as I wanted, and pose, and it was so satisfying. I hardly got any group shots of The Spoonful even though they were paying me to be there and get them; they never would pose for them. ::next |
