![]() Steven StillsThis was Steven Stills’ album cover (it’s not the exact picture on the cover, but almost). This was done in 1969 up the hill from Boulder in Gold Mountain, Colorado; he had rented a little cabin there. The day before there wasn’t any snow, but late that evening it fell -- we were up all night and someone looked out the window at about 5:30 in the morning, and there was all this snow around. Steven grabbed his guitar and said “Hey, get your camera, let’s get some photos.” So we went outside, and then he said “Wait a minute!” and ran in and got this pink giraffe. Which I hated. I took a few shots and said “O.K., we’re done with the giraffe.” He said “No, no, I want this in the pictures.” It was some signal to a girlfriend or something. I’ve said how I hated that giraffe but I think now that it really made the picture. Recently I went to Staples Center to see Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Steven’s got a great big wooden giraffe up on his side of the stage! So it’s kinda become a symbol for Steven of some kind. Nobody knows what – he doesn’t even know! ::back |
