The Queen Is Dead

If your ears perk up at the tinny sound of voices singing “Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty,” then you might be a Smiths fan, and if you’re a Smiths fan, then you’re probably already well aware that Rhino will be releasing a remastered and expanded version of THE QUEEN IS DEAD on October 20.

If you’ve somehow managed to miss hearing about this upcoming release, fear not, here’s the skinny on the three different versions that’ll be hitting stores that day:

• Deluxe 3-CD/1-DVD Boxed Set – Featuring the 2017 master of the album; additional recordings featuring demos, b-sides, and alternative versions; the Live In Boston album recorded at the Great Woods Center For The Performing Arts on August 5, 1986; and a DVD featuring the 2017 master of the album in 96kHz / 24-bit PCM stereo and The Queen Is DeadA Film By Derek Jarman

• 2-CD version – Featuring the 2017 master of the album and additional recordings

• 5-LP box – Featuring the 2017 master of the album, additional recordings, and the Live In Boston recording

A few weeks ago, Stereogum hosted an exclusive stream of “Rubber Ring / What She Said” from the Live in Boston album, which you may recall that we wrote about.

This past Friday Rolling Stone played host to the exclusive stream of the original demo for “I Know It’s Over,” which they summed up thusly:

“The demo of ‘I Know It's Over’ adheres closely to the final recorded version: Rumbly lines from Andy Rourke on bass, sharp triplets from Mike Joyce on drums, light acoustic rhythm parts and pushy but languorous leads from Johnny Marr on guitar. Joyce adds fills and cymbal splats to announce the arrival of each Morrissey hook. Morrissey alters the lyrics slightly, climbing into an ‘icy bed’ (versus ‘empty’ on the official version) and wondering, ‘I don't see what else I can do’ instead of ‘I don't know where else I can go.’"

You can check out the piece right here, and after you’ve done so, don’t be surprised if you find yourself clicking straight over to pre-order your very own remastered and expanded copy of THE QUEEN IS DEAD.
